1st Annual Slow Cooker Competition

As part of the Food Network Southern Food & Wine Festival at Gaylord Opryland, this exciting competition is limited to the first 40 contestants. Cash prizes will be awarded to the first 3 places and other great prizes will be awarded for the 4th – 10th place finishers.
First Place will be awarded $1,000.00 – Second Place will be awarded $650.00 – Third Place will be awarded $350.00
The 2009 competition theme will be CHILI. Any varietal will be accepted (beef, vegetarian, white bean, chicken, etc.) The competition will begin on Friday July 31, and Saturday, August 1, with the Finals taking place on Sunday, August 2, 2009. All cooking and prep work must take place at the competition site. Twenty Five percent of the contestants on each day (Friday & Saturday) will advance to the Finals.
No entry fee! The special room rate for competitors is $119.00 per night + tax and resort fee; reservations can be made by calling 1-888-677-9872 and using the code 09FCP.
Contest Rules:
- Each contestant:
- Will be furnished with a 6ft. prep table and a 6ft. cooking table as well as a Hamilton Beach Slow Cooker and electrical outlet.
- Will be given the same common ingredients as follows: Three varieties of dried beans (1 box of each (Black Beans, White Beans, and Kidney beans); 1 lb, ground Beef; 1lb ground chicken; 1 cup Cumin; 1 cup chili powder; 2 cups tomato sauce; 1 green Pepper; 2 jalepeno Chiles; 2 Pablano Chiles; 2 scotch Bonnet Chiles; 2 Ancho Chiles
- Will be allowed to “shop” from the common table items as follows: Lemons, Limes, Grapefruit, White Rice, Elephant Garlic, Ginger Root, Celery, Russet Potatoes, Red Skin Potatoes, Mushrooms, Carrots, Dried Spices, Thyme, Rosemary, Pickling Spice, Kosher Salt, Black Pepper, Cajun Spice, Lemon Pepper, Bay Leaves, Oregano, Tarragon, Onion Salt, Garlic Salt, Italian Spice, Parsley, Fresh Herbs, Rosemary, Thyme, Chives, Cilantro, Parsley, Beef and Chicken Broth, White Wine, Red Wine, Crushed Tomatoes,Tomato Sauce, Tomato Paste
- May bring additional ingredients and must bring their own personal cooking utensils including any knives, spoons, cutting boards, measuring spoons & cups, etc. No utensils will be provided to any contestant.
- Will turn in their dish at 3pm for judging.

- Each contestants dish will be judged on the following:
- Creativity
- Taste
- Temperature
- Appearance
- Judges panel will be made up of three local Chefs and all decisions are final.
